Preserving the appearance and structural integrity of buildings is very important in both older heritage buildings as well as older structures. Damage to a building, although apparent aesthetically, can have damaging effects to the overall structure of the building.

Efflorescence and rising damp can have a serious and detrimental effect on buildings. Brickwork and joints may become damaged due to the dampness and the resulting crystallisation can break individual bricks.

If left untreated, entire walls may become unsafe due to structural deterioration and will ultimately lead to costly repairs in the future.

Why Oxal?

MC-Bauchemie’s Oxal product range ensures the preservation of structures by preventing moisture from penetrating the existing structure and prevent salts from forming on the interior walls. This is achieved through the application of:

  • A damp proof course hydrophobic low pressure injection into the brickwork to prevent the rise of moisture.
  • Slurry components below the DPC to provide horizontal waterproofing.
  • Surface spatter coating to provide a bonding layer for the render.
  • Quality render system applied to the prepared surface to guarantee protection form moisture and salts.

The Oxal system is a tested systematic approach which uses quality products that work in conjunction with each other to defend structures; heritage building or otherwise, from rising damp, water damage and efflorescence.

Rising Damp

Rising damp in brickwork can become apparent in basements, especially in historic structures and heritage buildings. The dampness can spread throughout walls and degrade the bricks as well as cause efflorescence which can crumble and deteriorate the wall itself. To repair the effects and prevent the spread of rising damp, MC-Bauchemie offer a comprehensive system which ensures protection and reliability.

Our Solutions

Moisture can penetrate the basement substrate and to prevent this MC-Bauchemie offers Oxal HSP and Oxal HSP-ME are hydrophobic low pressure injection products which effectively narrow capillaries. This damp proof course reduces moisture penetration. Oxal DS-HS slurry compounds can be installed below the DPC or the interior waterproofing. Uneven or rough profiles, cracks and indentations can be filled with Oxal SPM to prepare both wet and saline contaminated brickwork.

Dampness Prevention

Another cause of efflorescence is water penetrating exterior walls and brickwork. To prevent penetration and crystallisation on interior surfaces, MC-Bauchemie offer exterior water proofing products formulated for the repair and restoration of buildings. The protection from exterior water sources prevents water from penetrating the substrate ensuring the structural stability of the structure.

Our Solutions

To ensure an even thickness of the water proofing and even drying out, at the floor/wall junction and internal corners – coving is formed with Oxal SPM mortar. The primed substrate is covered with MC-Bauchemie’s Nafuflex waterproofing which can be integrated into the foundation edges. Glass fibre fabric reinforcement mesh can be integrated between the Nafuflex layers for increased pressure resistance and layer thickness.

Effloressence Control

Basements can often be ignored during restoration and redevelopment of concrete structures. Saline water penetration of brickwork from the outside can result in deterioration of the masonry and salt crystallisation on the internal wall. The crystallisation can fracture individual bricks and blocks and even the entire wall.

Our Solutions

To prevent crystallisation of the interior brickwork, MC-Bauchemie have developed a system which comprehensively protects the interior substrate and prevents salt crystals from forming. Oxal DS-HS is a spatter coating applied to act as a bonding layer for the Oxal quality render. The render neutralises moisture and salts and due to its porous nature, the quality render is not de-bonded from the brickwork.
